The Process of Designing a Custom Engagement Ring
Designing a custom engagement ring is a straightforward and enjoyable process, often much easier than expected! It all begins with an initial consultation with the couple that’s either in person at our showrooms in Chicago or New York or virtually. During this first conversation, we really hone in on your vision of the ring design. We also cover everything from diamond shape preference and ring style to determining one of the most practical details of the process: your perfect ring size! Next, we move on to selecting the center stone, whether it’s a diamond or another precious gemstone, depending on the look you’re creating. Once all of these decisions are set, the ring production begins, allowing you to simply sit back and relax while your dream ring is brought to life!
Initial Consultation and Design Inspiration
We begin with that initial consultation so that we have a solid grasp on your custom engagement ring desires. Those early conversations are all about understanding and further discovering your unique vision!! Sometimes the client knows exactly what they want from the very beginning and they stick with their original idea the entire time. Other times, the main idea remains at the core with some detail changes. It’s so important to try on all of the different diamond shapes and setting styles so that you can ultimately decide what you do (and don’t) like.
Metal is another important aspect to consider – yellow gold, rose gold, white gold and platinum are all stunning, the choice is yours! We also love seeing any inspo that you’ve seen on social media or Pinterest as guidance. Bring in those pics, dream boards and random screenshots of your perfect engagement ring!
Factors That Affect the Timeline of Custom Rings
A typical timeline for our custom engagement rings is roughly 4-6 weeks. One of the biggest factors that can affect the timeline is the diamond selection process. If we are sourcing something very specific or rare it may take a bit longer. In some cases, if a diamond replacement is needed for an existing ring, this may also extend the timeline slightly.
Design Approval and Revisions
We are always happy to provide a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) of your ring prior to actually creating it. Technology is amazing - why not utilize it!? From there, we are able to discuss and revise any details of the ring design to make sure that you’re completely happy and excited!
Sourcing Diamonds and Materials
We have an extensive inventory of diamonds, however, if we don’t have exactly what you are looking for we can always source it for you. DRD works with multiple suppliers all over the world to source the highest quality materials for your fine jewelry and can certainly find what you’re looking for.
Crafting and Final Touches
All of our engagement rings are custom made at our factory in Chicago! We have lots of Chicago pride and love that many of our jewels are locally made. This also makes communication even more seamless as many conversations can happen in person between our showroom and factory teams. Hands-on dedication, attention to detail, and craftsmanship are at our core.
